Educators and community members gathered Thursday at Winfree Bryant Middle School to wish a happy birthday to one of the school's namesakes.

Hattie Bryant, known by many as Miss Hattie, was given a reception at the school in honor of her 90th birthday. Bryant was a longtime educator in the Lebanon Special School District. She taught for 20 years at the Market Street School before being asked to teach at Lebanon Jr. High, now known as Walter J. Baird Middle School. Bryant retired from teaching in 1978.

Well-wishers from throughout the school district, including LSSD Director Scott Benson and many teachers from Winfree Bryant, came to have cake and wish her happy birthday.

Principal Becky Kegley said the school was going to surprise Bryant as the honorary homecoming queen at the Aviators' ceremonies Thursday night.

"We are going to give her a sash, and flowers and a crown," Kegley said. "I think it's going to be very nice."
