Schools put deadline on board of regents

The Wilson County Board of Education discussed several items at it’s Monday meeting following the appointment of Interim Director of Schools Mary Ann Sparks.

One such discussion came in the report from County Attorney Mike Jennings, who presented an update on the old Vocational Building behind the old Lebanon High School.

The Tennessee Board of Regents expressed interest in using the building for its own technology school, but no agreement has been reached. Board member Ron Britt asked Jennings if the board could ask for a deadline to reach an agreement with TBR. Jennings said he recommended giving them 60 days.

“If they don’t come back with a favorable agreement, we will find our own use for the building,” Board Chair Don Weathers said.

“For the 60 percent of students who graduate and do not attend college, we want them to be better prepared for careers after high school.”

Another item on the agenda was approval of bids for the purchase of buses. Transportation Director Joshua Hinerman requested the board accept a bid for 10 school buses from the Mid-South Bus Center. The purchase includes five 90-passenger buses, two 36-passenger buses and three 48-passenger special needs lift buses. The bid was approved unanimously.

Deputy Director of Finance Mickey Hall addressed the board regarding the alternative meals program the system has in place.

“At the work session on Saturday, the board asked us to look at our alternative meals…if people do not have lunch when they come through the lunch lines. We are recommending to go from $4 to $10 in Kindergarten-fifth grade. We don’t recommend any changes in 6-8 or 9-12.

“Through January we served nearly 800,000 meals in our district. There were 3,400 alternative meals. The two biggest schools being the two middle schools, West Wilson Middle and Mt. Juliet Middle with roughly 1,800 of the 3,400 - let us try it, see what impact it has.

“We will make a report back to you all to see if you want to make further changes at the end of the school year,” Hall said.

“I’d like for you to add an item to the agenda on May 1 for us to have a report back to see how it progresses. let us monitor this and see how things go,” said Weathers.

Changes to several board policies on second reading were deferred to the March meeting in order to give the interim director time to review them and make recommendations.

The board will next meet at 6 p.m. on March 3 at the Central Office.
