The Wilson County Board of Education had a full schedule Friday at its monthly meeting. Among items on the agenda were changes to several board policies and approval of budget amendments.

Interim Director Mary Ann Sparks made a couple of announcements in the director's comments portion of the meeting, including the school system receiving a beautification award from the Mt. Juliet-West Wilson Chamber of Commerce. She also announced Mitzi Smith was named assistant principal for the new Watertown Middle School.

Two items concerning the new Watertown High School were also addressed.

The board voted unanimously to establish a committee for naming the press box at the new high school football stadium after longtime Watertown resident and former Watertown Mayor Edsel Floyd.

A second item concerning the school was to transfer the name of the current Watertown stadium – Robinson Stadium – to the new stadium. Board member Bill Robinson, for whom along with his father the stadium is named, told Chairman Don Weathers "I would like the board to know that I will not participate in any discussion on this, nor will I vote on it."

The motion passed in a 4-0 vote, with Robinson abstaining.

Other items approved at the meeting included:

• final reading of a new board policy on concussions.

• changes to board policies concerning support services.

• changes to board policies concerning fiscal management.

• changes to board policy on pediculosis or head lice.

• changes to board policy regarding the grading system.

• changes to board policy regarding a Student Disciplinary Hearing Authority.

• changes to the 2013-14 and 2014-15 school year.

• changes to attendance rules and regulations.

• changes to the 2014-15 course catalog.

• changes to the 2014-15 class fee schedule for high schools.

• two budget amendments from the General Purpose School Fund.

• a bid for band uniforms for Wilson Central High School.

• adding Tuckers Crossroads Elementary School to the GCA services contract.

• an extension of the School Funds Audit Agreement.

The board will meet March 24 at 4 p.m. at the Central Office in a work session to discuss a board policy on Common Core standards.
