Local schools learned Tuesday the state will be delaying the release of TCAP scores, leaving school districts “scrambling” to get students their final grades.
Lebanon Special School District Director of Schools Scott Benson said the district received an email Tuesday afternoon bearing the news of the delayed release and that “it’s left everyone scrambling” to adjust end-of-the-year plans. As Wednesday was the LSSD’s last day of class and report cards will be issued Friday, Benson said the system asked for a waiver from the state.
“We have requested and received a waiver from the commissioner at the department [of education] to issue report cards without the TCAP score this year,” Benson said.
Typically, the TCAP scores account for 20 percent of the final average for students in third through eighth grades. With this waiver, the teachers will be able to average the grades that they currently have and issue report cards to students. Benson said the hope is for the TCAP scores to be released next week.
“We’re going to tabulate all TCAP scores at that point and make adjustments to grades when students would benefit,” Benson said. “If the child’s score will be benefitted from the TCAP score, new report cards will be printed and mailed to parents.”
Report cards will be issued at each school in the district on Friday. Benson said students will be picked up as normal on the bus, will pick up their report cards and will then re-board the bus. All schools will have doors open from 8-10 a.m. for parents wishing to come in and pick up their child’s report card.
Wilson County Schools will still be is session next week and will have a teacher work day May 30.
According to a press release from the school system, “at this time we are not changing our initial plan for the calculation of grades and the release of report cards.”
The current plan for the county schools for kindergarten and first grades is: Report cards will be mailed home after the teacher work day. All other grade levels: Report cards will be available on Parent Connect after the teacher workday. Because Parent Connect might not be accessible for some, schools will also mail out these report cards if the parent sends in a self-addressed stamped envelope by May 29.
