The day could not have been more beautiful for a wedding, and that is exactly what second graders hosted as they participated in the annual Tom Thumb Wedding in the elementary courtyard at Southside Elementary School.

Teacher Connie Jordan began the event about 20 years ago to teach children etiquette. They dressed, planned, sent invitations and followed the event with a reception complete with a bride’s cake, a groom’s cake and punch. The bride even threw her bouquet, and the groom tossed a garter to see who marries next.

Parents attended and took pictures, just like in a real wedding. Jordan retires this year after 30 years of service, but her students will long remember their lessons in etiquette through the Tom Thumb wedding.

Teresa Harris co-taught with Jordan this year. She and interim teacher, Stacy Trail, helped orchestrate the event.

Members of the wedding party were as follows: Bride Sophie Harman; Groom Brayden Ham; Maid of Honor Lauren Franklin; Bridesmaids Ava Alsup, Lakashia Sells, Carrie Pinckley and Ali McCrary; Best Man Brody Hearn; Groomsmen Tyler Lawrence, Jackson Steward, L.J. Gillihan and Deriq Conklin; Flower Girl McKayla Surratt; Ring Bearer Jacob Chansler; Preacher Elijah Lowery; Bride’s Parents Riley Grace Ford and Carson Fish; Groom’s Parents Neleigh Hutto and Taylor Woodsmall; Poem Reading by Georgia Ann Vermeulen; Bell Ringers wereAva Harper, Kaiden Benson and Mason Lamb; Singer Anaya Amissah; and Program Givers Panzie Chowning and Lelan Lawson.
