LifeFlight paramedics airlifted an unidentified street sweeper driver to Vanderbilt University Medical Center early Saturday morning after he was involved in an accident with a car on S. Cumberland Street.

Lebanon police Chief Scott Bowen said the incident happened at 5:37 a.m. in front of Southside Elementary School. He said the street sweeper driver apparently fell asleep and moved into the oncoming lane of the car. Both vehicles ran off the road and crashed in an attempt to avoid one another.

Bowen said the sweeper crashed into the Southside Elementary School sign.

Wilson Emergency Management Agency paramedics took both the driver and a passenger in the street sweeper to University Medical Center by ambulance. LifeFlight paramedics then airlifted the driver to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

The car’s driver and a passenger were not injured.

A private company owns the street sweeper, Bowen said, but the company name wasn’t immediately available.
