Woman charged with murder, robbery

MEMPHIS – Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agents and Fayette County Sheriff’s Department investigators charged a Shelby County woman with murder and robbery.
On Wednesday at about 6 p.m., TBI agents and investigators the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department charged Tanuja L. Rivers, 19, of Arlington, at the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department. She was charged with one count of felony first-degree murder and one count of especially aggravated robbery. Through routine investigative methods, TBI agents said enough probable cause was developed to charge Rivers with the homicide. The motive and exact circumstances surrounding this event remain under investigation. Rivers remained at the Fayette County Jail under $1 million bond.
On Dec. 6, Zewdneh Assemu, 43, of Bartlett, was found beaten and stabbed to death by Fayette County Sheriff’s Office investigators in a field near Highway 196 N. The cab Assemu was driving was found near the scene along with some of his personal belongings. The victim was found after his wife reported him missing to police. At the request of the Office of District Attorney General Mike Dunavant, TBI agents began the investigation with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department.
