A Wilson County grand jury indicted a former Wilson County Sheriff’s Department employee Tuesday on sexual battery and assault charges.
According to Sheriff Robert Bryan, the employee, John Frank Morris, 71, of Lebanon, was with the sheriff’s office for “several years” and worked in the visitation department dealing with people coming into the jail to visit inmates.
Bryan said the investigation into Morris took place during the past month after receiving a complaint from a visitor.
“We were notified by one of the visitors who came in that Mr. Morris had inappropriately touched her,” Bryan said. “Once we were notified of this, we began the investigation immediately and we handled the case like we would for any other normal person.”
Bryan said once Morris was confronted, he resigned.
“We continued to investigate and presented what we found to the [district attorney] and then presented it to a grand jury,” Bryan said. “Through the investigation, including different types of surveillance footage, we presented all of the evidence through to the district attorney’s office and he was indicted on those charges.”
Morris was arrested Tuesday and released on $2,500 bond. He is set to appear in court May 29.
