Charges filed against man accused of kidnapping teen

MEMPHIS – Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agents continue to investigate the kidnapping of a Fayette County teenager Monday, as charges against the man accused begin to accumulate.
TBI agents, along with Oakland police, the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office and the Henderson County Sheriff’s Department, continue to investigate the incident that happened around 12:15 a.m. in the Walmart parking lot in Oakland. The victim, a 16-year-old girl, told investigators Ma’Quarious Lynn Cathey kidnapped her at knifepoint and forced her into a vehicle.
The girl’s boyfriend called 911. A be on the lookout was placed and a pursuit began in Fayette County, initiated by Fayette County sheriff’s deputies. Troopers joined the pursuit as it continued east on Interstate 40. Cathey was operating the vehicle and, during the pursuit, sideswiped two THP cruisers. Troopers were not hurt. Cathey wrecked the vehicle near mile marker 98 in Henderson County, and then he fled on foot. Cathey broke into a building on Highway 104 in the Mt. Gilead area while fleeing and was ultimately captured off Highway 104 near the Douglas Meadows subdivision. The kidnapping victim was recovered uninjured. Investigators do not believe she knew her attacker.
Authorities in Henderson County charged Cathey with one count of burglary Monday afternoon. He remained Monday evening in the Henderson County Jail on $5,000 bond. TBI agents also secured warrants for Cathey in Fayette County, charging him with two counts of aggravated kidnapping, one count of felony evading arrest in a motor vehicle endangering others, and one count of carjacking. Tt is expected Highway Patrol will also charge Cathey in connection with Monday’s incident.
