To the Editor:

Big Brothers of Mt Juliet, formed in 1960 and can be traced back to 1948, is a nonprofit organization. We serve residences that have a permanent address in west Wilson County of Mt. Juliet, Hermitage, Old Hickory and Gladeville.

Our missions and goals are to never let a person go without food or necessities of life.

Big Brothers members are all volunteers and no member or officer of Big Brothers receives any compensation of any kind for their services.

When a family is experiencing short term difficulties with paying an electrical bill, water bill, heating bill, sewer bill, rent, needing food, medication, etc., for their family, we take that request and make a decision on whether help is needed. We have prevented many of these utilities from being turned off by the provider.

At Christmas each year we operate a Mother’s Toy Store where parents can shop for gifts for their children at no cost. More than 600 food boxes (for 300-plus families) are distributed to needy families each Christmas season so they will have food for their families. This need has increased each year and we expect requests to be even greater this Christmas season and the coming years. As the population of west Wilson County grows so does the needs of our community.

We are funded entirely by donations from businesses, the general public, other charity organizations, some churches and fundraisers. We have been hit hard these last several years with requests for assistance and our funds are very low. We are still operating with the same level of income as we were several years ago and we are slowly but surely getting behind.

If we are to continue with the same level of services we must have more help from our community. We would like for businesses to consider getting involved in some way and help us with this worthy cause. Some ways you can help is with monetary funds, clothing, toys, gift certificates, canned food and toy drives, etc.

You may have other ideas of how you would like to get involved or if you can help us with any of the above suggestion we would greatly appreciate your contribution to our mission of those in need. Together we can make a different in people’s lives.
