To the Editor:
This past Sunday afternoon and early evening as I was driving on N. Mt. Juliet Road, a bright orange shirt on a lawn tractor caught my eye. As I neared the man on the mower I realized it was a city employee mowing grass along the road in the right-of-way. Having been way too hot that day for most folks to be outside, I was a bit taken aback.
I sent a text message – when I got home and was no longer driving – to City Manager Kenny Martin to ask him if this was something special or a new way of serving the citizens. He responded to me to let me know there are just some things they cannot do during normal business hours and do, indeed, require work to be done on the weekends and after hours.
Among some of these tasks, he mentioned the mowing of grass near roadways, parking lots and specifically the lot at the train station. He said they did not want to mow near parked cars to avoid blowing the grass clippings onto the parked vehicles. I could tell by his response and from that of Parks Director Rocky Lee whom I spoke to about this today, this is “just the way we do things in MJ.”
To those who may not get the public recognition or show of appreciation they deserve; on behalf of everyone in Mt. Juliet I want to say thank you and to let you know how much we all appreciate you. Maybe to you it is all in a day’s work and just the way you do it.
To the rest of us it is another great reason why we love this community so much.
