The Wilson County Republican Party has been made aware that some of the commissioners are pushing for the appointment of someone to fill the Senate seat vacated by Mae Beavers. We have also been informed that someone, Steve Wilson, is running as a Republican and that he qualified for this seat. In addition, we also understand the rules of the state election commission allow for the county commission of the home county for the resigning senator to appoint a replacement for that position until the next election can be held.
It has been brought to our attention that Gov. Bill Haslam announced the primary for the vacant senate seat will be held Nov. 7, 2017, and the general election to fill that position will be held Dec. 19, 2017, with the winner of the election taking the Senate seat at the beginning of the next legislative session in 2018.
Since the legislature is not in session, the Wilson County Republican Party is respectfully requesting that the Wilson County Commission exercise the option of leaving this Senate seat vacant and allow the citizens of Wilson, Smith, Dekalb, Clay, Macon and Cannon counties to vote for the replacement of the former senator Beavers. Please leave this order of business to the people to decide whom they want to represent them in the Senate for the remainder of this elected term.
Thank you for all you do, and we ask you to accept this letter as our request to allow the people to decide who serves in this very important legislative position.
