Linden living history event and re-enactment to honor World War II veterans

Staff Reports • Dec 17, 2015 at 7:02 PM

LINDEN – On Sept. 27, World War II re-enactors, antiques vendors, musicians, vintage vehicle owners and spectators from across the country will gather in historic Linden to remember World War II and honor WWII veterans at a community event called Remembering WWII: Living History, Education and Honor.

The all-day event will feature four WWII veterans who will be sharing their stories besides numerous other vets who will be in attendance, two WWII re-enactments, a WWII-era swap meet, antiques vendors, a vintage vehicle display, an army encampment, live music from the Merchants of Cool big band and others, a recreation of a 1940s canteen and more. Admission is free.

Food and drink will be available for purchase from local volunteer fire departments as a fundraiser. The entire family will find much to enjoy at this interactive, hands-on living history experience.

Attendees will get a special opportunity not only to hear the veterans share their stories, but will also be able to speak with them, have a photo signed and express their appreciation in person.

“These men will not be around much longer,” said event host Anthony Courter. “Their lives are significant, and we must make every opportunity to learn all we can from them, and to express our gratitude for their sacrifices.”

This is the primary reason for the event, to provide a way for people to connect personally with their history.

“My philosophy is, if we cannot love the men who have already lived, then we’ll never love the men who are yet to be born,” said Courter. “If we understand our past, then we can understand where we are headed as a people. Our hope is that those who join us on September 27th will gain both understanding about our past and a fresh perspective on the future, while enjoying experiencing a piece of life as it was in the 1940s.”
