Numerous roads are shut down Thursday morning in Mt. Juliet and police officials said “the city is practically shut down.”

Mt. Juliet Police spokesman Tyler Chandler said there was a water rescue in progress on Beckwith Road with a man trapped in his car at 7:30 a.m.

“The city is shut down with flooded roads,” said Chandler. “A half dozen roads are impassible.”

Chandler said in an update at 9:45 a.m., Old Lebanon Dirt Road at Page Drive, W. Division Street at the Wilson County line and the Valley Center area remain closed due to flooding.

Curd, Beckwith and Woodridge roads are flooded, as well as Lebanon Road at the county line. Curd runs by Mt. Juliet High School. Another water rescue was reported at S. East  Springdale Road off Belinda Parkway.

“People need to use extreme caution,” said Chandler. “We are doing all we can to keep people safe.”

In an update, Chandler said at around 8:30 a.m. there was a home evacuation in progess on West Division Street and a stalled car on S. East Springdale. The entrance to Willow Creek Apartments is also flooded.

Heavy rains throughout the night and into the early morning swelled creeks and caused flash flooding after heavy rains Wednesday.

Wilson County Schools Safety Director David Burton said schools are in session.

“There were no discussions this morning about closing schools,” said Burton. “At 5 a.m., there was no flooding.”

However, Curd Road near Mt. Juliet High is under water at this time.  Burton said people could get to the school from Golden Bear Parkway.

Schools started at 7:15 a.m.

“Most of the children have been delivered,” said Burton. “Some buses are still arriving at school at 7:30. It’s a slow go.”

He said bus drivers have been told to use their discretion on routes.

There will be no early dismissal. Burton said once “things get settled,” Schools Director Dr. Timothy Setterlund will have a meeting about how to handle dismissal.
