United Way of Wilson County kicked off a new campaign year Thursday with a celebration honoring the kickoff of football season.

Former University of Tennessee Volunteers kicker and current Mt. Juliet High School kicking coach, James Wilhoit, made a special appearance to help set the tone for the event.

“An opening kickoff can set the tone,” said Wilhoit. “When I think about the United Way…This is such a noble cause. It’s such a great thing to be able to help out the community and to do that…You always want to set the tone and have that solid kickoff.”

The event, which doubled as the Chamber of Commerce’s Business After Hours, was held in the newly renovated Capitol Theatre Thursday evening.

Organizers also took the opportunity to name John McDearman as the 2013-2014 campaign chair and honor Jackie Cowden as well as Pam and Bob Black for their contributions to the organization.

New to this year’s event, representatives from local businesses played “armchair quarterbacks,” with the player making the most successful throws winning $750 for the United Way recipient of choice.

The second-place winner won $250 for the recipient of choice.

Organizers also recognized United Way of Wilson County’s “hard-hitters,” or key business contributors, which included Publix, Custom Packaging, The Lebanon Democrat, First Freedom Bank, Wilson Bank and Trust, Wilson County Schools, Middle Tennessee Electric Membership Corporation and Remar.
