Wilson Habitat to celebrate 20 years

With the addition of its 59th build in Wilson County earlier this year, Wilson Habitat for Humanity has big plans for 2014, which is set to mark the 20th anniversary of the county’s first Habitat build.

Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, Christian housing ministry that builds and repairs houses all over the world using volunteer labor and donations. Families and individuals who receive homes through the organization must apply and qualify financially.

On Nov. 17, Wilson Habitat closed out its 2013 build season and completed it’s 59th home, with Jessica Williams and son Brendon, 9, accepting the keys to their new digs at Alydar Drive between Watertown and Lebanon.

Additionally, Wilson Habitat also built two other homes in the area this spring that were dedicated in June.

To celebrate its 20 years of service in the coming year, the area Habitat charter launched its 20/20 Vision Campaign, which began Nov. 21, and continued through Dec. 31.

The campaigns goal was to establish Habitat’s foundation for the next 20 years by raising $20,000 by the Dec. 31 date.

Wilson Habitat Director Tory Tredway said the end of the year fundraising effort part of the campaign did not reach the $20,000 goal, but there was still a possibility and potential for donations and gifts.

Tredway said though this portion of the campaign has ended, the organization would still continue to do other things as a part of the entire campaign for their 20th year.

“We’ve got a few things in the works, but no specifics; we’ve just been working on getting the ball rolling on several items and events,” Tredway said.

One example, Tredway said, is a 20th anniversary celebration in April alongside the annual Houses of Hope fundraiser. Previously, this event has raised more than $20,000.

Tredway also said the organization again has three houses scheduled to be built this year. The first two are scheduled to begin building May 31 and another will be built in the fall.
