Members of the 15th Judicial District Bar Association gathered Wednesday to honor one of their own with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Local attorneys and friends assembled at Michael’s Cafe for a luncheon in Jim Kinnard’s honor on what was dubbed “Jim Kinnard Day.”

Steve Brown said the 15th District Bar Association began honoring a distinguished individual about five years ago. Past honorees include Ernest Connor and Comer Donnell.

“We look at those who have been practicing law a long time. We want to give them a bit of recognition for the hard work they have done in their distinguished careers,” said Brown.

The 15th District Bar Association’s President, Lisa Tomlinson, said, “These days that we honor elder members of the bar, it’s amusing to hear stories about how things used to be compared to what it is now.”

Kinnard began practicing law in Lebanon in 1966.

“This does not mean I am retiring,” he told colleagues as he received his plaque.

Several of Kinnard’s colleagues spoke about him at the luncheon.

“He and I have been friends for some time,” said William Farmer. “I know him to be a very capable and creditable lawyer. He works really hard for his clients.”

Haywood Barry echoed that sentiment, calling Kinnard “a workhorse.”

“He is the most diligent man,” Barry said.

After telling a few stories about Kinnard, Jack Lowery ended his comments saying, “Jim Kinnard has one of the best minds of the bar and probably this state. He’s a legend, people will talk about what he’s done.”
