The second annual Lean in Lebanon is just around the corner, and participation is high.

Sports Village owner Peggy Keel, who coordinates the event with the Lebanon-Wilson County Chamber of Commerce said sign-ups have been good for the 2014 edition, but there all still spots available for those wishing to participate who have not registered.

Weigh-ins will be held Saturday at Sports Village, and the program will kick off Monday.

“They can still come in and sign up on Monday at 10 a.m. at Sports Village,” said Keel. “It’s really fun.”

The month-long program features several activities designed to help participants “jumpstart their ways to a healthier, happier life,” according to Keel.

“It’s a one-month fitness program designed to help people lose weight. To teach people how to burn calories and make simple little changes. Just little things without depriving yourself.”

The program was started in honor of Keel’s late husband, Johnny Keel, who lost a 10-year battle with cancer in 2010. It culminates on May 17 with the Go Johnny Go 5K/10K.

“He worked so hard to encourage people to stay healthy,” said Keel. “He had a never-give-up attitude. We’re trying to teach people how much fun being active can be.”

Participants are placed in teams, and each team has a fitness coach to keep them on track to reaching their fitness goal.

“The best way is to have friends to do activities with. You can encourage each other,” said Keel.

She also said participants will “find themselves laughing - and sweating.”

The cost of the program is $49 and includes the fee for the Go Johnny Go run. Keel said any participant who completes the full program will receive $25 of the original fee back from the chamber.

Keel, like her late husband, has a passion for helping others lead a healthy lifestyle.

“It’s what I’ve done my whole life. I wanted to make our community healthier,” she said.
