Magazine brings local, artisan theme

Those looking for culture scenes, vibrant images and unique themes can look no further than East of the City Magazine.
Lebanon Publishing Co. is cruising right along with its second edition of its bi-monthly lifestyle magazine, with the May/June issue serving a theme rich with homegrown and artisan fare.
Creative Director Charity Toombs said she wanted the second edition to have a local focus, especially mainly on life in the communities east of the city.
“This issue, we focus our attention on the growing trends of local, organic and handmade,” Toombs said. “As our community embraces this re-emergence of business with ventures like the Farmisan’s Market and thriving small businesses, we spotlight our favorites from local fare to posh fashion.”
As the inaugural edition featured a different feel: a behind-the-scenes look at reality star Tina Brady and spring trends from Helene Singer Cash on location at the greenhouse of Moss’ Florist and Garden Center, Toombs said the second turn for the magazine would really go to the roots.
“We wanted to have a more local, organic, handmade artisan feel,” Toombs said.
She said they magazine also added multiple other different components this time around.
Of the new additions, one feature is a new mixology section, where the magazine partners with local businesses to do educational pieces on wine and spirits, as well as a cocktail recipe every issue.
“We’re also excited because this issue the publication has gone to a larger size,” Toombs said.
Toombs said they also had brought on a new male writer to provide a different voice to readers.
In keeping in relation to the homegrown theme, Toombs said this issue’s cover story debuts Trey Cioccia and his Farm House restaurant.
Toombs said Cioccia, a Mt. Juliet native, “focuses on traditional southern cuisine featuring modern technique and fresh, locally sourced ingredients.”
“Trey is very tied to his local roots, so those who visit his Farm House restaurant can tell the staff they’re from Wilson County and get a personal meet-and-greet from him,” Toombs said.
Along with the restaurant cover story, Toombs said there was also an additional restaurant spotlight, as well as an “In the Kitchen” section and recipes with University Medical Center’s Marketing Director Adam Groshans.
The newest East of the City Magazine also features a fashion spotlight on Posh, a boutique touting local, handmade collections and designs from a Lebanon resident, Mallorie Shirley.
To further touch on the artisan theme, the magazine also boasts a “Local Handmade Finds & Favorites” page, as well as a health and beauty section with multiple natural remedies using items that can be found in the kitchen and home.
“With this issue we just wanted it to be in relation to the rise of farmers’ and the artisans’ markets,” Toombs said. “Our goal was to keep things local and handmade and kind of go with the re-emergence of that.”
Looking toward the future, Toombs said the next July/August edition of the magazine would be “quintessentially summer” themed.
