It’s a zoo at Empower Me Day Camp

It looked like a zoo Thursday at the fairgrounds with Empower Me Day Camp.
Empower Me Day Camp kicked off its annual summer camp last week with a Talent Week, and continued this week’s “sensory” theme with a live petting zoo Thursday morning.
The day was not only filled with animal fun, though, as different inflatables, including a Noah’s Ark, were also part of the fun.
Camp goers enjoyed the time outside on the inflatable slides and also made their way over to the petting zoo. Though some were shy at first, they soon warmed up to the friendly llamas, donkeys, goats and even rabbits.
Little Critters provided the animals and activities.
Now in it’s 16th summer, the camp is in session for three weeks in June and three weeks in July. Future dates and themes include Cowboy Week next week, Sensory Week from July 7-11, Carnival Week from July 14-18 and Tropical Week from July 21-25.
Each week, the camp hosts around 30 children ranging in age and disability, from Down syndrome to physical and hearing impairments.
Applications are sent out early in the year for the summer camp and often fill up quickly.
Daily routines during camp tailor to the theme of the week and include gross motor activities outside and fine motor activities — usually a craft — each day. Last year during Tropical Week, camp goers played Hawaiian volleyball and went pineapple bowling with a coconut for their gross motor skills activity.
Throughout the year, Empower Me Day Camp also holds different events such as Christmas Camp, Spring Fling, Easter Egg Hunt and Fall Sports Fest.
Empower Me Day Camp will hold it’s next fundraiser, the annual Summer Swinefest, in August, complete with barbecue, live and silent auctions and more.
