Wilson County voters interested in serving as election officials for any of the elections in 2014 may now apply online at wilsoncountyvotes.com.

The new online application offers a convenient way for anyone interested in working as a poll official to apply with the Election Commission.

Each election the Election Commission appoints about 350 poll officials to staff the 31 Election Day polling sites and the four early voting locations. Many poll officials cannot work every election because of vacations, unforeseen events or other conflicts. There is always a need for trained poll officials who are prepared to serve.

Poll officials must be registered voters in Wilson County, able to read, write and communicate in English, have access to online training, able to lift 40 pounds, able to work a 14-hour day, available on Election Day and enjoy working with people.

“Being a poll worker is like being a paid volunteer,” said Phillip Warren, administrator of elections. “The pay and the frequency of elections are not great enough or often enough to be a job anyone would take for the money. The greatest benefit to being a poll worker is the gratification derived from your active participation in the election process and public service.”

“Poll officials receive training online as well as classroom and hands on,” said Warren. “Wilson County’s early voting and Election Day polling sites are staffed with well-trained, dedicated poll officials.

“Poll officials also have the opportunity to give back to the community by participating in the Adopt-A Precinct program. The Adopt-A-Precinct program was initiated in 2012 and was a tremendous success. We look forward to more partnerships this year with local groups to provide a public service while they raise funds for their projects.”
