CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Maria Aplin scored early through the first half for a Cumberland lead and Emily Shires netted the game-winner in the 73rd minute, giving the 25th-ranked Phoenix a 2-0 victory over Campbellsville University in women’s soccer action Tuesday night.

Aplin scored her sixth goal of the year just nine minutes into the match, with Rebecca Holloway centering to Aplin for the finish, but the Tigers were the aggressors for much of the rest of the half, outshooting the Phoenix, 7-6, and continually peppering CU goalkeeper Ashley Kambeitz in net.

Campbellsville (2-9-1, 0-1-1) broke through at the 34-minute mark, with McKayla finding the back of the net on an assist from Valeska Tovar for the equalizer.

Cumberland (6-3-1, 2-0-0 Mid-South) controlled the run of play for almost the entire second half, taking 10 shots to just one by the Tigers. Campbellsville’s Amanda Howard made four saves in the period, but she could not stop the flick from Shires in the 73rd minute on an assist from Jennifer Segura, the seventh goal of the year from Shires and fourth in the last three matches.

Kambeitz finished with four saves, all in the first half, while Howard collected eight, four in each period. Cumberland outshot the Tigers, 16-8, overall in the match.

The Phoenix will travel to 12th-ranked Lindsey Wilson on Friday in a battle of the only two ranked teams in the Mid-South Conference.
