Dance to chair national event: Tennessee’s most famous fisherman, Bill Dance, has been named chairman of the National Hunting and Fishing Day.

The Sept. 23 NHFD draws attention to the nation’s outdoors opportunities.

Dance, who for over three decades has hosted popular TV outdoors shows, has been recognized for his work with such organizations as The American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, Make A Wish and St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

“It’s good to have the voice and perspective of one of America’s favorite anglers,” said Misty Mitchell, director of conservation programs for Wonders of Wildlife Museum.

Dance, who resides in West Tennessee, is a member of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame and the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame.

Trap shoot: K.J. Davis took top honors in the Cedar City Gun Club’s weekly trap shoot, hitting 49 of 50 targets. Ray Hutcheson won Senior Veteran, Lucas Green was top Junior, Alex Hart top Sub-Junior and Dan Smith won Class B.

For information about the weekly competition, the new Scholastic Trap Team or other area shooting sports contact Ben Schade at the Gun Club.

Turkey harvest down: Fewer turkeys were bagged on this year’s opening weekend that last year’s, and the TWRA attributes the decline to the cold, rainy weather that hampered hunter turnout.

Also, the unseasonably cold weather seemed to affect the turkeys, and even veteran hunters had to work to bag one of the 5,147 birds that were tagged – compared to 8,518 taken during last year’s opening weekend.

New check-in option: Turkey hunters are reminded that this season they can check in their birds on mobile devices. They also can take them to traditional TWRA check-in sites or do it on-line at tnwildlife.org

Information about check-in procedures and requirements is available on the TWRA website.

New Fishing Guides: The TWRA’s 2013 Fishing Guides are available for free at most area outdoors outlets.

Fishing rules and regulations are detailed, along with license requirements and information about lakes and streams across the state.
