Turkey harvest picks up: After a slow opening weekend Tennessee’s wild turkey harvest numbers have improved.

At the TWRA’s last tally a total of 16,4890 birds had been killed, on pace to equal the 30,000-plus turkeys taken in recent seasons. The season runs through May 12.

Maury County leads in turkeys bagged, with 696.

Elk hunt applications set: The TWRA will start accepting applications for the state’s 5th annual elk hunt on June 12, with a July 24 deadline for applying.

The hunt is scheduled for Oct. 21-25 on the North Cumberland Wildlife Management Area located off I-75 north of Knoxville.

As in previous hunts, five individuals will be selected, in addition to a participant in the Young Sportsman Elk Hunt. That hunt was added last year.

Four participants will be selected through a random computer drawing and the fifth permit will be auctioned off. The Youth Hunt tag also will be chosen through a computer drawing. Youngsters ages 13-16 are eligible.

When the application period begins, persons may apply at any TWRA license agent, TWRA regional office, or on-line at www.tnelkhunt.org

Detailed information, including application fees, will be announced by the TWRA.

Tennessee’s elk-restoration program is in its 11th season and has been a success. It’s goal was to restore the indigenous animal to its native state and increase its numbers to the point that limited hunting could be sustained.

Friends of NRA sellout: The recent Wilson County Friends of NRA banquet and fundraiser was a sellout, and generated $25,528 to support shooting sports and related activities.

A portion of the funds go to scholarships to local individuals, shooting clubs and organizations.

Trap shoot: Danny Shaw missed his first bird, then hit the next 49 straight to win the Cedar City Gun Club’s weekly trap shoot.

Mac McCaleb won Veteran honors with a 48, K.J. Davis was top Junior (48), Lucas Green top Junior (45) and Rob Mathis won Class B (43).

The Wilson County Straights trap team made its debut last Saturday at Cookeville in the Scholastic Clay Target Program, under the direction of Ben Schade.

Contact Schade at the Gun Club for information about the team, or other area shooting events and activities.
