Quail donation: A University of Tennessee graduate has donated $100,000 to the national Bobwhite Foundation and promised to match other donations of up to $1 million.

Joe Crafton grew up in West Tennessee hunting quail and, like many hunters, is concerned about the steady demise of the bird’s numbers in recent years.

Now head of a sales and marketing company in Dallas, the UT grad has joined the campaign to restore the bobwhite.

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is devoting more resources to the attempt to improve quail habitat around the state.

Trap shoot: The Cedar City Straights, a first-year trapshooting team comprised of Wilson County youngsters, competed in last week’s Scholastic Clay Target Program event at Christiana and several shooters posted impressive scores:

Timothy Whitlock 92, Tyler Baker 91, Alex Hart 90 and Lucas Green 84.

The event drew 327 shooters.

In the Cedar City Gun Club’s weekly trap shoot, Ray Hucheson scored a near-perfect 49. Taylor Bolin won the Junior competition with a 47, Mac McCaleb was top Veteran with a 43, Alex Hart top Junior with a 40 and Sarah Mathis won the Ladies event with a 39.

For information about the weekly shoot, the scholastic program or other area shooting events contact Ben Schade at the Gun Club.

Fishing suggestions: The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is soliciting suggestions from the state’s anglers about fishing rules and regulations.

All proposals will be taken into consideration when the Tennessee Fish & Wildlife Commission sets the 2014 fishing regulations.
