Locals participate in the Tennessee Senior Olympics Tennis Tournament

Seven seniors from Wilson County participated in the Tennessee Senior Olympics’ tennis tournament held June 23-25 at the Williamson County Indoor Sports Complex.  Of the seven seniors, five received placing medals in their respective age group. 

The Tennessee Senior Olympics is open to athletes age 50 years and older and states their mission as “to promote healthy lifestyles for seniors aged 50 and up, through fitness, sports, and an active involvement in life. Our programs contribute to the vision of healthy, active and vital senior adults.”

Rick and Vicki Jacobs received a silver medal in 55-59 mixed doubles. Vicki Jacobs also received a gold medal with her partner, Denise Cotton, in the 55-59 women’s doubles competition. 

Don Hobbs and Chip Vanatta received a bronze medal in the 50-54 men’s doubles competition. Hobbs also received a silver medal in the men’s 65-69 singles competition. 

Hester Gibbs and Jake Jacobs competed in the 75-79 men’s doubles competition, but chose not to compete for a medal due to injury in their first match. 

The National Senior Olympics, which are held every two years, will take place in Cleveland, Ohio on July 18. To qualify for the nationals participants must finish in the top three in the state competition.

Don Hobbs and Vicki and Rick Jacobs will attend the national competition. The Jacobs will be competing in the 55-59 mixed doubles, Vicki Jacobs will also compete in the 55-59 women’s singles, and Hobbs will compete in the 65-69 men’s singles.
