Boater warning: Even though Labor Day marked the traditional peak of boating season, persisting warm weather means lots of ongoing activity on area lakes.

With that in mind, the TWRA plans to maintain policing of such popular lakes as Old Hickory and Percy Priest, where boat traffic is always congested.

The TWRA has made enforcement of boating regulations a high priority in recent years, but even so, there have been a number of fatal accidents on area lakes this summer.

A point of emphasis is enforcing Boating Under the Influence (BUI) laws. Operating a boat while under the influence of drugs or alcohol carries the same penalties as operating a vehicle on the highway.

Also, TWRA officers are cracking down on violations of flotation device rules. An approved life jacket for each passenger must be aboard each both and readily accessible – not stored away in a compartment.

Fishermen comments: Fishermen are invited to send comments and recommendations for the 2014 season to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.

They can be e-mailed to: twra/comment@state.tn.us/twra, called into the TWRA fisheries department at 781-6622, or mailed to: TWRA Fishing Comments, Ellington Agricultural Center, P.O. Box 41489, Nashville, Tn. 37204.

Comments must be submitted by the end of this week.

Trap shoot: Chris Cooper broke 48 of 50 targets to win the weekly trap shoot at the Cedar City Gun Club. K.J. Davis took Sub-Junior honors with a 42.

Hunter Ed: With dove season and squirrel season underway and more seasons set to open soon, the TWRA reminds residents that anyone born after Jan.1, 1969, must complete a Hunter Education Course in order to get a license.

Information about license requirements and options is available at the TWRA website, tnwildlife.org or in the current Tennessee Hunting & Trapping Guide, available at most outdoor outlets.
