Garrett, CU men claim golf titles at MSC Fall tourney

GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Austin Garrett fired a second-round 66 to claim medalist honors and Ryan Botts carded a second consecutive round of 70, helping Cumberland claim the team title at the Bluegrass Fall Classic/Mid-South Conference Fall Tournament on Tuesday at Cherry Blossom Golf & Country Club.

It marks the third career victory for Garrett, who also posted wins at the RedHawk Classic in 2012 and in a dual match versus Bryan College during his freshman season. The Smithville native posted the low round of the tournament with his six-under par 66 on the par-72, 6,838-yard Cherry Blossom course.

Botts, a sophomore from Lebanon, carded his second straight round of two-under 70, finishing third in the field of 65 competitors. Freshman Zach Kean (Cross Plains) improved his score by five shots with a second-round 75, tying for 33rd overall, and sophomore Peyton Broyles (Gainesboro) tied for 12th after shooting a 79 on Tuesday.

Freshman Zach Johnson (Tampa, Fla.) shot 81 in his second round, tying for 25th. Two other freshmen competed as individuals in the event, with Jake Dailey (Crossville) carding a second-round 79 (tied for 42nd) and Ian Whittamore (Lafayette) posting an 85 (tied for 52nd).

As a team Cumberland won by three shots over Lindsey Wilson and the University of the Cumberlands, the first time the Cumberlands has been defeated in a tournament by a Mid-South Conference school in three years.

Cumberland will play again Oct. 21-22 at the Millsaps Collegiate at Deerfield Country Club in Madison, Miss.

Smith shoots 74 on final day of MSC Fall tourney

GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Cumberland senior Kayla Smith carded a two-over par 74 and placed 10th overall in the final round of the Bluegrass Fall Classic/Mid-South Conference Fall Tournament on Tuesday at Cherry Blossom Golf & Country Club.

The Greenbrier native tied for the best score of the day with three other players and improved her place in the individual standings by 12 places. Her two-day score of 158 was just five shots from fifth place.

Junior Katie Legge (Portland) posted a second-round score of 80, tying for 11th overall, while senior Lindsey Taylor (Milan) registered a second consecutive round of 85, tying for 22nd.

Freshman Kaleigh Chitwood (Lafayette) made a nice jump for the Bulldogs, firing a final-round 83 to finish 25th individually. Sophomore Quincy Hogan (Carrollton, Ky.) carded a 93 (31st) on Tuesday and freshman Carson McKinney (Munford) shot 92 (38th) on the par-72, 5,752-yard course.

Cumberland will take part in the Trevecca Fall Invitational next Monday and Tuesday at Old Hickory Country Club.
