Central derails Beech, throws wrench in 9-AAA race

GLADEVILLE — The Wilson Central defense held Beech scoreless in the second half, stopping the Buccaneers on downs four times in the fourth quarter to earn a 30-17 win Friday night.

"Our defense sold out tonight. I can not be more prouder of a group of guys. Our offense also played well. We finally put

four quarters of football together," Wildcat coach Brad Dedman said after Central moved to 4-4 for the season and

threw a monkey wrench into the District 9-AAA race at 2-3 in league play after handing the Bucs their first district loss. "Our kids fought hard tonight."

Beech, which lost for the first time to Central in falling to 5-3 for the season and 4-1 in the district, started the game off early scoring on its opening possession, running less than three minutes off the clock as Dorian Carter crossed over from 3 yards out.

Later in the first stanza, Wilson Central tied the score on a short run by Kaleb Butler. The key play in the drive was a 65-yard pass from Jordan Roundtree to Gabe Angel.

The Buccaneers retaliated on their next drive. They drove the football 69 yards on 15 rushing plays, capped by a 13-yard run by Kourtney Hawkins.

Late in the second quarter the teams traded field goals as Carson Garrett of Beech nailed a 31-yarder while Brad Cavanough hit a 22-yarder making the score at halftime 17-10 in favor of Beech.

Wilson Central got the ball to open the second half and wasted no time in tying the ballgame. It took the Wildcats less than two minutes to get in the end zone. Angel ran the ball in from 9 yards out. The key play was a

43-yard pass from Roundtree to Alex Price that was tipped by the Beech secondary and fell into his hands.

Roundtree ended the game 6-of-14 for 201 yards and an interception.

With less than five minutes left in the third quarter, Wilson Central took the lead on a 13-yard run from Roundtree, the first of two scores on the night for the signal caller.

In the fourth quarter, Wilson Central's defense stopped Beech on downs on four occasions, two with quarterback sacks from Preston Reed and Weston Rountree. On two other occasions the Wildcats stopped the Buccaneer

running backs on short yardage plays.

Wilson Central rounded out the scoring with a little less than two minutes to go on a short run by Roundtree.

Central is off next week and will play host to Lebanon at 7 p.m. Oct. 18.
