BARDSTOWN, Ky. — Sophomore Ryan Botts birdied two of the last three holes for a two-shot victory and senior Austin Garrett and freshman Zach Johnson both finished in the top 5, leading Cumberland to a second team victory in two events this fall at the St. Catharine Fall Invitational this week at Bardstown Country Club at Maywood.
Botts led by one shot after the opening round but played the first 15 holes in three-over in Tuesday’s round and trailed Asbury’s Steven Brooks by a shot heading to the par-3 16th hole. Brooks pulled his tee shot left and made bogey on the downhill hole guarded by water front and right. Botts nailed his tee shot within two feet of the front pin placement for a birdie, a two-shot swing.
The Lebanon native added a birdie on the par-5 18th hole for the two-shot win for his second individual medalist honor and eighth top-10 finish in 10 career events.
Garrett and Johnson both struggled in the opening round, each shooting seven-over par 79, but both players were part of resurgence by the Bulldogs in Tuesday’s final round. Garrett carded a one-over par 73, tying for the third-best score of the day, finishing fourth overall with a two-day score of 152. Johnson collected a two-over par 74, placing fifth individually, as Cumberland was 14 shots better in the second round and claimed a 14-shot team victory over Pikeville.
Freshman Zach Kean tied for 21st after shooting rounds of 84-78 and sophomore Peyton Broyles posted two rounds of 82, tying for 26th.
Cumberland will play again next Monday and Tuesday at the Millsaps Collegiate at Deerfield Country Club in Madison, Miss.
