Trousdale County claims 8-A flag

From staff reports • Dec 15, 2015 at 11:37 AM

HARTSVILLE — Trousdale County clinched the District 8-A championship Friday night with a 43-31 victory over visiting Gordonsville on The Creekbank.

The Yellow Jackets improved to 9-0 going into an off week. They will close the regular season Nov. 1 at Red Boiling Springs, a team which can’t catch Trousdale in the standings while the nearest contenders, Gordonsville and Goodpasture, have losses to TCHS and thus are on the wrong end of a tiebreaker.

Noal Smitherman jumped Gordonsville to the early lead on a 4-yard run less than three minutes in.

But Kenyan Harper, who ran for 175 yards on 12 carries, got Trousdale County going with the first of his four touchdowns [three rushing] on a 27-yard run.

Christian Lauderdale broke the 7-7 tie with a 27-yard field goal with less than a minute remaining in the first quarter.

The teams traded touchdowns in the second quarter with Marquel Claiborne’s 2-yard run and Dillon Burnley’s 4-yarder keeping Trousdale ahead of Gordonsville, which received scoring runs of 3 and 26 yards  from Kaelin Cason, who led the Tigers with 87 yards on 19 carries. The Jackets carried a 23-21 edge into halftime.

A 13-0 third quarter gave Trousdale some breathing room as Harper scored on a 27-yard run and a 20-yard pass from Claiborne, his only completion in three attempts.

Cason scored on a 40-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter to bring Gordonsville within 36-29 before Harper’s 11-yard run sealed the deal. The Tigers scored a late safety before falling to 5-4, 2-1.

In addition to his running, Harper also co-led Trousdale’s defense as he and James Kelley each notched nine tackles.
