Baker recognized again by Fred Mitchell Award committee

From staff reports • Dec 15, 2015 at 11:39 AM

Cumberland placekicker Beau Baker was recognized for the second straight month by the Fred Mitchell Award Selection Committee for continued excellence on and off the field.

The Mt. Juliet native has remained perfect on the field, converting all eight field goal attempts and making all 26 extra points. He earned Mid-South Conference Player of the Week honors Sept. 23 after hitting four field goals at Belhaven. The Friendship Christian School product is 5-for-5 from 30-plus yards this season.

Off the field Baker was part of the team’s clean-up efforts at Sherry’s Run in September and as well as Field Day at Sam Houston Elementary School in October. He also volunteered with Worship Without Walls, cleaning, organizing and painting rooms at the Mt. Juliet Senior Citizens Center, and was a team co-captain in Relay for Life this year as well.

“October was a terrific month for place-kickers. There were notable game-winning field goals and records, including a record-tying 62-yard field goal by a freshman kicker in California. Heading into the last month of the regular season, we are delighted to recognize these place-kickers that were nominated by their schools for extraordinary performance,” said Fred Mitchell.

The annual Fred Mitchell Outstanding Place-Kicker Award (also known as the Fred Mitchell Award) is provided to the nation's top collegiate place-kicker among more than 750 FCS, Division II, III, NAIA and NJCAA football teams. The Award is named for Fred Mitchell, the record-setting place-kicker, Wittenberg University Athletic Hall of Famer, author, philanthropist and Chicago Tribune sports columnist.

The recipient of the Fred Mitchell Award is chosen based on excellence on the football field and in the community. The Award's Watch List is released in late July, top performers are recognized monthly during the college football season, and the winner (who is not required to be on the Watch List) is announced in mid-December. The school of the Award winner receives scholarship funds and the Fred Mitchell Award trophy will be presented each February at the National Football Foundation Chicago Metro Chapter Awards Ceremony at Halas Hall.
