Winfree Bryant’s boys bolted to an early lead and held off visiting Walter J. Baird 41-33 in season-opening cross-town middle school basketball Monday night.

Earlier, Winfree Bryant’s girls emerged from a back-and-forth battle with a 32-30 victory.

The Aviators soared to a 14-3 first-quarter lead and were up 24-8 at halftime. Baird closed a 32-19 deficit at the start of the fourth quarter to 34-32 with two minutes to play. But the Blue Devils missed an open layup which would have tied the score, then were called for an intentional foul.

Forward Jaquanta Rhodes tossed in 12 points for Winfree Bryant while Kemon Neuble notched eight, Kito Aruh and Joe Greenwood six each, Devin Campbell five and Elijah Terry four.

Dylan Alsup, Baird’s big man who played all over the floor, totaled a game-high 18 points for the Blue Devils. Jared Lawrence finished with five, Kentez Burford four and Tyrique Cooper Daniel Covile and Brady Chappell two each.

In the girls’ game, Baird led 9-7 following the first quarter, trailed 17-14 at halftime and was back in front 24-22 going into the fourth.

Samantha Newton knocked in 24 points from the post for Winfree Bryant while Maleigha Oldham finished with five, Katie Smith two and Allie Dozier a free throw.

Hunter McGowan led the Devilettes with 11 points as she and Jenna Manus each sank a pair of three-pointers. Christaney Brookshire scored seven points, Manus six, Becca Merrill four and Matti Averitt two.

Winfree Bryant will play host to West Wilson on Thursday with the girls tipping off at 6 p.m. Walter J. Baird will play host to Southside at the same time.

Shelton’s three lifts Southside boys at buzzer

Ethan Shelton’s buzzer-beating three-pointer lifted Southside’s boys past visiting Watertown 44-42 in the Saints’ home opener Monday night.

Preston Tomlinson’s layup put the Purple Tigers up 42-41. Southside turned the ball over, forcing the Saints to foul.

But the Tigers missed the front end of a one-and-one and Southside grabbed the rebound with seven seconds left.

Shelton’s second triple of the night gave him a game-high 16 points. Eric Odum added eight points, Nathan Harris scored seven, Baylor Franklin six, Cameron Marshall four, Braden Costley two and Griffin Creswell a free throw as the Saints bounced back from a season-opening loss at Smith County last week.

Tomlinson, a forward, paced three Purple Tigers in double figures with 12 points. Guard Austin Lasater added 11 and fellow guard Tyler Vastola 10. Jared Tomson threw in three and Lee Farley, Braiden Allison and Caleb Parisher two apiece.

Watertown led 12-9 following the first quarter and 19-18 at halftime before falling behind 32-28 going into the fourth.

Southside will travel to Walter J. Baird on Thursday with the girls tipping off at 6 p.m.
