Cumberland University’s Reed Gurchiek and Blake DeBoard were named to the Capital One Football Academic All-District 2 team this week. Both student-athletes will now enter the pool of players from around the country to be selected Academic All-American later this month.
Gurchiek has started six games and played in all nine contests at quarterback for the Bulldogs. The former Mt. Juliet High star rushed for 479 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 5.2 yards per carry, and passed for 763 yards and three touchdowns. He has started 26 contests in his career and accounted for 3,432 passing yards with 20 touchdowns and 1,083 yards on the ground with 14 TDs in his Cumberland career.
DeBoard has played in 28 career outings at running back, wide receiver and as both a kick and punt returner, as well as seeing action on other special teams. The Panama City, Fla., native collected 1,240 all-purpose yards during his career, including 481 rushing, 230 receiving and 456 on kickoff returns. He has two career touchdowns – one rushing and one receiving – and 25 tackles.
Student-athletes must be a sophomore, junior or senior academically and maintain a 3.20 grade-point average or above to be eligible for the award.
