West Wilson wins two from Winfree Bryant

Visiting West Wilson’s girls broke open a close game in the second quarter and defeated West Wilson 36-22 Thursday night.

Afterward, West Wilson’s boys bolted to an early lead and pulled away to a 46-25 triumph.

The Lady Wildcats used a 17-3 second period to turn a 10-6 edge into a 27-9 cushion as the Lady Aviators slipped to 1-1.

Kennadhi Killebrew dropped in a pair of three-pointers in leading the Lady Wildcats with 13 points. Bailey Kaposy connected on a three and a pair of free throws as she and Sarah Harmon had five points apiece. Taylor Tucker finished with four, Kaylee Richett three and Martoia Buchanan and Chelsea Davis two apiece.

Samantha Newton knocked in 14 points from the post for Winfree Bryant while Maleigha Oldham finished with four and Emily Jones and Allie Dozier two apiece.

West Wilson’s boys led 12-5 following the first quarter and 20-6 at halftime as the Aviators slipped to 1-1.

Gavin Johnson threw in 13 points and fellow guard Nathaniel Paredes for West Wilson. Dalton King added eight points, Dennis Stallings and Bryan Akain four each, Cameron Bass three and J.C. Crawford and Taj Mason two apiece.

Kemon Neuble’s nine points paced Winfree Bryant. Devin Campbell finished with five, Elijah Terry and Kito Aruh four each, Braden Reece two and Jaquanta Rhodes a free throw.

Winfree Bryant will play host to Southside at 6 p.m. Monday.

Baird boys shut down Southside in second half

Walter J. Baird’s boys shut down visiting Southside in the second half Thursday night as the Blue Devils surged from behind for a 33-20 triumph.

Southside led 18-13 over foul-plagued Baird at halftime before the Blue Devils outscored the Saints 20-2 in the second half to improve to 1-1 for the season.

Forward Dylan Alsup threw in 13 points for Baird while big man Tavarus Booker, who missed Monday’s season-opening loss to Winfree Bryant with a midfoot sprain, supplied seven points and 10 rebounds. Jared Lawrence finished with four points while his sixth-grade twin Caleb threw in three free throws. Daniel Covile held Southside scorer Ethan Shelton to four free throws while he, Tyrique Cooper and Kentez Burford each tossed in two points.

Griffin Creswell’s six points paced Southside while Cameron Marshall finished with five, Eric Odum three and Brandon Costley two.

Baird will play host to Watertown in a Saturday matinee. The junior-varsity girls will tip off at 10 a.m., followed by the varsity at noon.
