DALTON, Ga. – The Cumberland men’s basketball team used a pair of strong defensive outings to grab two victories over the weekend, allowing just 55 and 69 points, respectively, against Voorhees College and Morris College at the Roadrunner Club Classic hosted by Dalton State University.

The Bulldogs (4-0) were led in the opening game against Voorhees (0-2) by freshman guard Marquel Hickerson, who scored a game-high 22 points on 8-for-15 shooting en route to a 61-55 victory.

Both squads battled back-and-forth in the opening quarter struggling shooting from the field. CU led by as few as one point with five minutes to play in the half, but broke away to a six point advantage at the break.

The Tigers fought back to open the second half, using a 16-2 run in the first six minutes to open up and eight point advantage. Voorhees would lead by as many as 11 in the frame.

With 9:30 remaining, Cumberland would kick into gear, using a 12-1 run to tie the contest at 48 with just over six minutes on the clock. It would not be until the 1:09 mark that the Bulldogs would take the lead for good, en route to a 61-55 win.

The second game, Saturday’s contest against Morris, proved to be no easier as the Bulldogs escaped with a four-point win at 73-69.

Though tight throughout, Cumberland led for a majority of the contest, surrendering just one lead in the game to go with three tie scores. In the end, a pair of field goals from Cameron Prather with 12 seconds to play would secure the win.

Sophomore guard Alex Flagler paced the Bulldogs with 26 points on 10-of-17 shooting. CU again struggled as a team, shooting just 36.5 percent from the field. Junior Moritz Dern added 18 points and 11 boards for his first double-double of the season.

Cumberland remains on the road for the next five contests, beginning with the first Mid-South Conference game of the season, Thursday’s matchup against the University of Rio Grande. Two days later, the Bulldogs will take on Shawnee State in another MSC game.
