Commanders bow out of Haile tournament

MURFREESBORO — Friendship Christian’s middle school boys bowed out of the James C. Haile State Tournament Monday with a 40-36 setback to Van Buren County at Middle Tennessee Christian.

Van Buren led 11-10 following the first quarter, 17-16 at halftime and 31-26 through three as the Eagles improved to 13-1.

Friendship fell to 7-5 with four regular-season games remaining, starting with Thursday’s Winter Festival game against visiting Lancaster Christian at the Bay Family Sportsplex. The girls will tip off at 6 p.m.

Caden Mills fired in 15 points from the wing for Van Buren County.

Point guard Mike Jones Jr. finished with 15 points for Friendship while Hanley Sobieszczyk added 11 from the post. Ben Jamison and Ethan Bult each finished with four points and Jagger Pirtle two.

MJCA celebrates 8th-Grade Night with sweep

MT. JULIET — In a game which would be low-scoring even in football, Mt. Juliet Christian patiently pulled out an 18-14 win over Clarksville Academy as the Saints’ celebrated Eighth-Grade Appreciation Night.

Earlier, the Lady Saints prevailed 36-16.

Mt. Juliet Christian’s boys led 6-4 following the first quarter before trailing 11-10 at halftime and 14-12 through three as the Saints moved to 7-8 for the season and 5-4 in the Greater Nashville Athletic Conference.

Both teams ran their offenses through long possessions, often lasting a minute or more. Alex Pitman scored 16 points for the Saints while Jacob Hall had the other two.

The Lady Saints led 23-7 at halftime after beating the Lady Cougars 30-5 in Clarksville earlier this season.

Marcella Gallione led the Lady Saints with 14 points while Courtney Wall and Caroline Hibbett each scored seven, Caitlyn Smith five, Mary Laxton two and Sam Stilts a free throw.

Mt. Juliet Christian will travel to Poplar Grove in Franklin on Wednesday for a 4:30 p.m. makeup game which was rescheduled from Thursday.
