NASHVILLE — Alena Gizdić posted a three-set victory in a super tiebreaker at No. 2 singles and Angelica Sepulveda and Franki Jecker won their doubles match, but Cumberland dropped a 6-1 decision to Belmont on Friday in women’s tennis action at Centennial Sportsplex.

The Bulldogs (0-1) played with just five players, forfeiting the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matches to the Bruins (2-3) and essentially giving the home team two points in the match.

Sepulveda and Jecker won 6-0 over Nikki Maciel and Abbie Mather for CU, but Belmont’s Laura Van Eeckhoudt and Kendall Warren recorded a 6-2 win at No. 1 against Gizdić and Antea Dedić.

In singles Van Eeckhoudt defeated Sepulveda, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1, but Gizdić registered a 6-2, 4-6, 10-8 victory over Warren at No. 2. Maciel posted a 6-3, 6-4, triumph versus Dedić at No. 3, while Mather collected a 6-1, 6-1, win at No. 4 against Jecker and Ann Lauren Fiepke defeated Tais Lacerda Bezerra at No. 5, 6-1, 6-0.

Cumberland will next compete at the Auburn Montgomery Spring Invitational on March 6-8 in Montgomery, Ala.

Men's tennis moves up one spot in NAIA coaches' poll

Despite a 4-3 loss in its season-opener last week, the Cumberland men’s tennis team moved up one spot to seventh in the NAIA men’s tennis coaches’ top 25 poll released this week by the national office.

The Bulldogs lost at NCAA Division I Eastern Kentucky last Friday, with junior Antonio Manuel Marcelo, sophomore Pablo Borrero and freshman Diogo Soares registering singles victories for the Bulldogs. Senior Pedro Rodrigues lost in three sets and freshman Garry Tokas dropped a super tiebreaker in the final match on the court in the loss.

The No. 7 ranking ties for the highest ranking in school history for the program. Cumberland ended the 2013 campaign ranked seventh in the NAIA Men’s Tennis Coaches’ Postseason Top 25 Poll and the squad has been ranked 11th or higher in every poll over the last two seasons.

Cumberland will play at Belmont on Sunday and then travel to the Auburn Montgomery Spring Invitational on March 6-8 in Montgomery, Ala.
