Blue Devils split final day of Challenge

SMYRNA — Lebanon rolled past Shelbyville 13-2 before losing to host Smyrna 18-7 as the Smyrna Grand Slam Challenge came to a close.

The Blue Devils broke open a 4-1 lead against Shelbyville with seven scores in the fourth inning.

Dawson Hamilton pitched five innings for the complete-game win, allowing three hits and no walks while striking out five.

Lebanon finished with 10 hits, including two each by Hamilton, Nick Sanders, Eddie McDaniels and Bryce Lester. Both of Hamilton’s hits were doubles which drove in three runs while Sanders tripled and doubled. Lester also doubled while Caleb Young tripled and knocked in two runs.

Smyrna snapped a 2-2 tie with a run in the third, three in the fourth, four in the fifth and eight in the sixth. Lebanon’s four in the fifth drew the Blue Devils within 10-7 before they fell to 2-4.

Leadoff batter Cameron Roberts doubled, tripled and drove in four Smyrna runs as the Bulldogs banged out 11 hits against four Lebanon pitchers. Eddie McDaniels threw 3 1/3 innings in relief of starter Nolan Chambers and took the loss.

Lebanon had eight singles, including two each by Jake Millay and Peyton McCullough.

The Blue Devils will travel to District 9-AAA rival Beech tonight for a 7 p.m. game.

Austin’s no-hitter closes Classic for Bears

CHATTANOOGA —  Zach Austin pitched a no-hitter Saturday as Mt. Juliet closed out the Scenic City Classic with a 10-0 triumph over St. Benedict at McCallie.

Curt Hoppe drove in three runs on a homer and a double while Eli Mason also hit a home run out of two hits. Marshall Gei and Jackson Hollinshead added a pair of hits apiece to the Golden Bears’ 10-hit attack in the five-inning game.

Mt. Juliet finished 3-1 in the Classic and is 5-1 overall going into a 7 p.m. home game against District 9-AAA rival Beech on Wednesday.
