HENDERSONVILLE — Wilson Central reached the semifinals of the Commando Classic over the weekend at Drakes Creek Park.
The Lady Wildcats were eliminated by Sparkman [Ala.] 4-0 and finished third in the tournament. They went 8-6 for the week overall.
Gibbs was awarded the championship of the 52-team tournament [from Tennessee, Alabama and Kentucky] when Sparkman couldn’t play in the finals due to an Alabama rule forbidding it to play a game past midnight on Saturday.
Senior Brittany Wiseman, juniors Hannah Bodenhorn and Morgan Powell and sophomore Katie Eakes represented Central on the all-tournament team.
Eakes and Wiseman each went 10-for-20 while Kelsey Tomlin finished 9-of-20. Powell and Keily Preston picked up eight hits apiece.
Central went 1-2 in pool play Friday but got the No. 2 seed due to a three-way tie for second place.
The Lady Wildcats ousted Murfreesboro Central Magnet 13-4 Saturday, beat host Hendersonville 8-1, defeated Dickson County 5-3 and Seymour 2-0.
In pool play, Central outscored Obion County 7-4 as Wiseman hit her first home run of the season. The Lady Wildcats built a 7-0 lead before the Lady Rebels rallied.
Northeast edged Central 2-1 in extra inning after tying the score in the final frame of the time limit.
Eventual-champion Gibbs shut out Bodenhorn 1-0 despite 14 strikeouts in five innings by the Lady Wildcat junior.
Central will travel to defending state champion Smyrna tonight for a 6:30 p.m. game.
