One million pounds of venison: Tennessee's Hunters for the Hungry program reached a milestone during the recent deer season: the amount of venison donated over the past 16 years surpassed one million pounds.

Overseen by the Tennessee Wildlife Federation, the program encourages hunters to donate a deer -- or portion of a deer -- to be processed and donated to organizations that feed the needy.

Contributions have increased in recent years due to two factors: more deer are being harvested, and more hunters are being made aware of the beneficial program and learning how to participate.

Last season more than 2,300 whole deer were donated, with an additional 30,000 pounds of smaller donations. That venison was processed into about a half-million meals.

The donated venison must be processed by a licensed meat processor. It is then picked up and distributed by various charitable agencies, such as the Second Harvest Food Bank.

For information about participating in this season's program visit the Tennessee Wildlife Federal Website.

The Tennessee Valley Authority is conducting its annual fisherman's survey on the Tennessee River to gauge the amount of use, type of fishing done and so on.

Fishermen will be asked about the hours spent fishing, their financial investment, type of fishing the prefer, and other information.

The data will be used by the TVA to make management decisions about the waters.

License reminder: spring fishing season is underway, and turkey season opens March 29. Hunters and fishermen are reminded that last year's license expired the end of February.

They can be renewed on-line or at most outdoors stores.
