CU men's tennis wins on the road

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — Cumberland swept the doubles matches and posted victories in four of the six singles outings, as the eighth-ranked Bulldogs won their fourth straight in a 7-2 victory over the University of the Cumberlands in men’s tennis action Sunday.

Cumberland (5-4, 2-0 Mid-South) started the match with three doubles wins, as Andres Burgos and Pablo Borrero defeated Daryl MacLeish and Tyler Smith, 8-4, at No. 1 and Pedro Rodrigues and Garry Tokas collected an 8-6 win at No. 3 over Danilo Garcia and Eduardo Cabrera. Tenth-ranked Diogo Soares and Antonio Manuel Marcelo outlasted Ariez Heshaam and Dan Fraser, 9-8 (6), at No. 1, giving CU a 3-0 lead heading to singles.

Heshaam defeated 16th-ranked Marcelo, 6-3, in the first set before Marcelo retired at No. 1 and Kenny Wilsons posted a 6-1, 6-2, victory at No. 6 versus Dylan Nelson for the Patriots (8-4, 4-2) two points in the match.

Borrero collected a 6-0, 6-4, win against Fraser at No. 2, while Rodrigues won 6-4, 6-2, over Cabrera at No. 3, Burgos led 5-2 over Garcia at No. 4 before he retired and Tokas registered a 6-4, 6-2, victory versus Smith at No. 5.

Cumberland will continue its current five-match road swing with outings at Martin Methodist today and second-ranked Auburn Montgomery on Friday.

Bulldogs fall at the Cumberlands, 6-3

WILLIAMSBURG,Ky. — Franki Jecker won her singles and doubles matches for 15th-ranked Cumberland, but the Bulldogs lost at the top two singles spots and dropped a pair of doubles points in a 6-3 loss to the University of the Cumberlands on Sunday.

Cumberland (4-5) continues to struggle in close matches with just five players, giving the opposing teams two points before the match even starts.

Jecker and Angelica Sepulveda defeated Sydni Grimes and Chanel Williams, 8-1, at No. 2, but Neesha Thirumalaichelvam and Erin Hart won 8-4 over Antea Dedić and Alena Gizdić at No. 1, giving the Patriots (7-5, 4-2) an early lead.

Thirumalaichelvam, ranked third nationally in singles, posted a 6-3, 6-3, victory over 32nd-ranked Sepulveda at No. 1 singles and Williams claimed a 6-2, 6-3, win versus Gizdić. Lyndsay Collette also defeated Tais Lacerda Bezerra, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 5, for UC’s singles points.

Dedić posted a 6-1, 6-0, win against Grimes at No. 3 for the Bulldogs and Jecker collected a 6-4, 6-0, victory over Hart at No. 4.

Cumberland will play twice this week on the road, first today at Martin Methodist and then Friday at third-ranked Auburn Montgomery.

Women shut out St. Catharine

Cumberland’s women swept all four contested singles matches and both doubles outings that were played and did not drop a game in a 7-0 victory for the 15th-ranked Bulldogs over St. Catharine on Friday at the Tommy Gray Memorial Courts.

In doubles Antea Dedić and Alena Gizdić defeated Brittany Taylor and Sarah Pascoe at No. 1 and Franki Jecker and Angelica Sepulveda won against Chelsea Landrum and Shelby Rush at No. 2.

In singles Sepulveda posted a victory over Taylor at No. 1, Gizdić defeated Pascoe at No. 2, Dedić collected a win versus Landrum at No. 4 and Tais Lacerda Bezerra recorded a victory at No. 4 versus Rush.

Bulldogs post 9-0 win versus St. Catharine

Cumberland’s eighth-ranked men posted victories in both contested doubles matches and five singles outings in a 9-0 win over St. Catharine on Friday at the Tommy Gray Memorial Courts.

In doubles Andres Burgos and Pablo Borrero defeated Andre Jacomini and Felipe Barrientos, 8-2, at No. 1 and Pedro Rodrigues and Garry Tokas posted an 8-5 win at No. 2 versus Ivan Kerkoc-Portillo and Sergio Mendoza.
