ATHENS, Ala. — Senior Austin Garrett shot two-under par 70 and sophomores Peyton Broyles and Ryan Botts both carded even-par rounds of 72, with all three players finishing in the Top 10 and leading the Cumberland men’s golf team to a second-place showing at the RedHawk Spring Classic at Canebrake Club.

Garrett and two other players posted the second-lowest round of the day with the two-under par score on the 6,501-yard course. The senior tied for third overall, his third top-3 finish in three tournaments over the last three weeks for the Bulldogs. The Smithville native has placed in the Top 4 in six of the team’s seven events this academic year.

Broyles followed his one-over par round on Monday with an even-par score in the second round, tying for fifth. It marked the best showing this year for the Gainesboro native and his third Top 10 of the season.

Botts improved by two shots in Tuesday’s round and finished alone in eighth place. The Lebanon native tied for second at Trevecca two weeks ago before a hiccup last week in the Mid-South Spring Invitational.

Freshman Zach Johnson carded a second-round 76 and tied for 24th, while freshman Zach Kean dropped three shots in the second round, shooting 79 and tying for 29th overall.

As a team Cumberland made up the two-shot deficit to Blue Mountain College from the first round and tied the Toppers in the final standings. Faulkner University ran away with the overall team title, winning by 19 shots, while Faulkner’s Brandon Godwin carded a five-under 67 on Tuesday and won low medalist honors by four shots over teammate Daniel Jansen.

Cumberland will next play in the Mid-South Conference Championships on April 21-23 at Bardstown Country Club at Maywood in Bardstown, Ky.
