Bulldogs post seventh straight win

GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Cumberland posted victories at the top four spots in singles and won again at No. 2 doubles, as the seventh-ranked Bulldogs recorded their seventh consecutive victory, 7-2, over Georgetown College on Saturday.

The Bulldogs (8-4) improved to 4-0 in MSC play as well with three conference outings remaining before the MSC Championships on April 24-26 in Georgetown, Ky.

Andres Burgos and Pablo Borrero posted an 8-5 victory over Chris Bartlett and Jacob Loveland at No. 2 doubles and CU picked up a point at No. 3 with a default, but Georgetown’s Gustavo Echeverria and Ryne Least outlasted 10th-ranked Antonio Manuel Marcelo and Diogo Soares, 7-1, in a tiebreaker at No. 1.

Cumberland rebounded with four straight wins in singles, with Borrero defeating Echeverria, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 1 and Pedro Rodrigues picking up a 6-2, 4-6, 10-2, victory over Least at No. 2. Soares registered a 6-0, 6-2, win at No. 3 versus Ryan Simms and Burgos claimed a 6-1, 6-3, triumph over Bartlett at No. 5. CU also got a default at No. 6.

Loveland posted Georgetown’s other point in the match with a 6-2, 3-6, 10-2, victory at No. 5 against Garry Tokas.

Cumberland will play host to Campbellsville at 2 p.m. today in the first of three matches this week. CU will travel to Bluefield on Thursday and take on Pikeville at home on Saturday.

CU ladies fall in another close match

GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Angelica Sepulveda and Antea Dedić each won in singles and Cumberland posted two doubles victories, but Georgetown College picked up four singles points en route to a 5-4 victory on Saturday.

The Bulldogs (5-7, 1-3 Mid-South) lost for the third time this season by 5-4 or 6-3 scores and the second time in conference play.

Sepulveda and Franki Jecker posted an 8-2 victory at No. 2 doubles over Jacqueline Otis and Natalie Hill before Dedić and Alena Gizdić claimed an 8-6 win at No. 1 over Kaelin Roberts and Kelly Swanson at No. 1.

Sepulveda defeated Otis, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 1 singles and Dedić registered a 6-1, 6-0, win at No. 3 versus Swanson, but the Tigers (11-4) won the remaining three contested matches in straight sets.

Roberts posted a 6-3, 6-2, victory versus Gizdić at No. 2, while Hill claimed a 6-2, 7-6, win over Jecker at No. 4 and Shelby Eden recorded a 6-3, 6-4, triumph against Tais Lacerda Bezerra at No. 5.

Cumberland will play three times in the coming week, playing host to Campbellsville today and Pikeville on Saturday and sandwiched around a trip to Bluefield on Thursday.
