Lady Commanders clinch district top seed

KNOXVILLE — In its first season in Division II, Friendship Christian clinched the top seed in the upcoming East-Middle District 1-A softball tournament Friday by sweeping Knoxville Webb 18-3 and 19-1 in a combined six innings.
The Lady Commanders rode a 12-run second inning in the first game and a 14-run first in the nightcap [as the home team] to finish 9-1 in the district and climb to 22-10 for the season.
Friendship will travel to East Robertson at 5 p.m. Monday and play host to Macon County on Wednesday for Senior Night.
In a seven-team district, Friendship will draw a bye to the final four which will start April 28 at Donelson Christian. The top three teams will advance to the East-Middle Region at Davidson Academy.
Kendall Kelsh pitched both games for Friendship and benefitted from the big second inning of the opener which broke a 2-2 tie.
Following two walks and a hit batter [one of three HBPs in the inning], Kelsi Dickey hit an RBI single and Tana Whited a two-run single. After another hit batter, Brittany Petry picked up an RBI single. Sarah Hall and Brooke Eakes had back-to-back two-run singles before Dickey drilled a three-run homer to left.
Jordan Burton tripled to open the game and scored on Dickey’s single. Whited reached on an error to score Dickey.
In the four-run third, a pair of walks set up consecutive singles by Eakes, Dickey and Whited.
After Webb jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the nightcap, 14 Lady Commanders scored to put the game out of reach.
Following a walk, back-to-back RBI doubles by Burton and Dickey set up Brice Dabbs’ three-run homer to left-center field.
Following a series of walks and errors, Burton banged out a three-run single, Whited an RBI single and Petry a two-run single.
Kelsh got a chance to bat in the second and connected on a three-run single. Dickey singled to cap the scoring.
Kelsh allowed a total of five hits in six innings with nine strikeouts and two walks.
