Cumberland’s Bill McCormick was named the Mid-South Conference Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year and Antonio Manuel Marcelo received MSC Player of the Year honors in a vote of league coaches released last week during the conference championships in Georgetown, Ky.
McCormick and Marcelo were honored for the second straight year with the awards after helping Cumberland claim the Mid-South Conference regular season championship, the fourth title for the Bulldogs in the MSC but first since 1999.
Cumberland went undefeated in league action, defeating Lindsey Wilson, 5-4, earlier this month on the road. The Blue Raiders are a perennial top-10 team and had won at least a share of the MSC regular season championship for 11 straight years.
The Bulldogs started the year just 1-4 (with two losses to NCAA Division I opponents) before reeling off 13 consecutive victories from March 19-April 25 before falling 5-3 to Lindsey Wilson in the championship match of the conference tournament this past Sunday. The NAIA Championships are set for May 12-17 in Mobile, Ala., and CU will find out who and when it plays in the national tournament next Tuesda.
Marcelo has compiled a 15-5 singles record and 12-9 doubles mark this academic year. The Cascais, Portugal, native is 4-2 against ranked opponents in singles, including a 6-4, 6-3, victory over Lindsey Wilson’s 36th-ranked Edberg Espinoza this past weekend and a pair of wins versus Xavier’s Kyle Montrel (currently No. 16 in the nation) and also Graceland’s Birkir Gunnarson (currently No. 11 nationally).
