With his defensive chart in hand, Watertown coach E.J. Wood positions his defenders during the first inning of Tuesday’s District 8-A winner’s bracket final at Friendship Christian. The Purple Tigers took advantage of first-inning wildness by Goodpasture’s starting pitcher to grab a 3-0 lead. But the Cougars came back with seven runs in the bottom of the inning and went on to run-rule WHS 16-6 in five innings, dropping the Tigers to 17-13. Watertown will face Trousdale County, a 7-6 winner over Gordonsville in the earlier loser’s bracket game, in the loser’s final at 4:30 p.m. today with the survivor catching Goodpasture at 6:30 in the championship round needing two wins [the “if necessary” game is set for Thursday] to take the title. The two finalists will advance to next week’s Region 4-A tournament.
