Trousdale County third baseman Brock Ellis leaps to catch a throw from right field as Watertown’s Cameron Jennings dives into the bag during the bottom of the third inning of Wednesday’s District 8-A loser’s bracket final at Friendship Christian. The Purple Tigers wiped out a 2-0 Trousdale lead with three runs that inning and went up 7-3 later in the game. But the Yellow Jackets rallied to tie the score before a two-out throwing error on Bo Whitlock’s grounder scored Jennings in the seventh gave Watertown a 10-9 victory. Jennings went 3-for-5 with two RBI.
The Tigers then faced Goodpasture in the championship round and fell behind 10-0 after two innings on the way to a 13-0 five -inning loss to fall to 18-14.
But Watertown broke Trousdale’s nine-year run of qualifying for the Region 4-A tournament [the Yellow Jackets finished second behind Friendship all those seasons before the Commanders left the league this year]. It’s the Tigers’ first region appearance since reaching the state’s round of eight in 2002, the last year only four teams were taken for the state tournament.
Watertown will travel to District 7-A champion Jackson County in the first round of the region at 6 p.m. Monday.
