Queens of District 9-AAA softball - again

Staff Reports • Dec 15, 2015 at 2:48 PM

GALLATIN — Morgan Powell’s two-run first-inning homer launched Wilson Central to a quick lead and Hannah Bodenhorn did the rest in a 6-1 one-hit victory over Beech for the District 9-AAA softball championship Thursday night at Station Camp.

Bodenhorn didn‘t allow a hit until leadoff batter Sheridan Allen, normally a slap bunter who faces drawn-in defenses, took a full swing and singled in the seventh inning. Beech then loaded the bases with none out before Bodenhorn got the last three of her 10 strikeouts to complete Central’s repeat district championship.

The Lady Wildcats will carry a 30-15 record into Monday’s home sectional against Northeast. Coach Michael Sheppard said he plans to start the game at 6 p.m., though it won’t likely be finalized until today.

Brooke Pfefferle and Claire Smith had RBI singles in the third inning and Kayla Varner singled in one of Central’s sixth-inning scores.

Beech, coached by former Friendship Christian pitcher and coach Erica Powell, reached the title game with a 4-3 win over Hendersonville earlier. The Lady Buccaneers scored their run in the third.

Varner, Powell, Pfefferle and Smith each had two hits and Karlie Odum and Kelsey Tomlin one apiece.

Bodenhorn was named tournament Most Valuable Player and was joined on the all-tournament team by fellow Lady Wildcats Powell, Pfefferle, Smith and Tomlin and Mt. Juliet’s Savanna Oliver.

The all-district team was named before the game. Mt. Juliet pitcher Savannah Sanders was the choice as MVP and her coach, Brad Rowlett, was chosen Coach of the Year.

Powell, Bodenhorn, Brittany Wiseman, Kendall Eden and Katie Eakes represented Central on the all-district team while Ashton Stowe, Shelby Woodard, Riley Walker and Emily Bombard were named from Mt. Juliet and Catlin Eakes and Sarah Aubuchon from Lebanon.

Central’s Katie Eakes and Lebanon’s Catlin Eakes are cousins. Friendship Christian third baseman Brooke Eakes is also related.
