Cumberland’s Richie Seaton was named the Baseball Player of the Week by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association on Tuesday for his performance from May 12-18.
It marks the final TSWA Player of the Week honors for the 2013-14 academic year.
Seaton has picked up his play at the most important time of the year, putting together his best two weeks of the season in the Mid-South Conference Championships and the NAIA Championship Opening Round. The Scarborough, Ontario, native led the Bulldogs with a .471 average (8-for-17) in the Opening Round in Kingsport last week, adding a pair of walks, four RBIs and five runs scored. He reached base 12 times in his 19 plate appearances during the club’s five games, posting two hits apiece in four outings and getting on base twice via errors in the other contest.
His best two games came in the two victories over seventh-ranked Missouri Baptist, going 2-for-2 with two walks, an RBI double and two runs scored in the 6-4 win before collecting two more hits and three RBIs in the 6-3 triumph, including a huge two-run double in the eighth that provided insurance runs for the Bulldogs. Seaton’s performance followed a strong showing in the conference tournament as well when he posted seven hits with six runs scored in 18 at-bats (.389) in five outings. The senior has raised his batting average 35 points during the last 10 games and is hitting .274 overall this season with five doubles, 30 RBIs, 39 runs scored and 64 walks in 60 games.
Cumberland, ranked 23rd nationally, will play eighth-ranked San Diego Christian on Friday at 9 p.m. CDT in the final game of the opening day in the 58th annual Avista-NAIA World Series in Lewiston, Idaho.
